History of Pueraria Mirifica

Pueraria Mirifica: Thailand’s Natural “Fountain of Youth”

Pueraria Mirifica, also known locally as Kwao Krua Kao or White Kwao Krua, is a native Thai herb found in the deep forests of northern Thailand. It has been valued in traditional medicine for generations due to its remarkable rejuvenating properties. Recognized as a part of Thailand’s national herbal identity, Pueraria Mirifica has been studied extensively by local universities and researchers.

Among the four varieties of Kwao Krua—White, Red (Butea Superba), Black, and Dull Grey—White Kwao Krua (Pueraria Mirifica) stands out for its medicinal, cosmetic, and dietary supplement applications.

Thai communities have used this herb for over a century, mainly to restore vitality and combat aging. Its rejuvenating reputation was further popularized in 1931 by Luang Anusan Suntara, who published a pamphlet detailing folk uses of the plant. According to his writings, Pueraria Mirifica can:

  • Reduce wrinkles and promote youthful skin
  • Darken white hair and support hair growth
  • Improve memory and relieve cataracts
  • Boost energy, circulation, and appetite
  • Alleviate sleep disorders and promote overall vitality

In 1932, Dr. A.F.G. Kerr, a British botanist in Thailand, drew scientific attention to the plant’s rejuvenating effects. Although initially misidentified as Butea Superba, the plant was later correctly classified as Pueraria Mirifica in 1952. Dr. Kerr’s work led to the discovery of unique phytoestrogens found only in this plant, which contribute to its hormone-balancing and anti-aging benefits.

Today, Pueraria Mirifica is regarded as a natural “Fountain of Youth” for both men and women and continues to be a focus of ongoing herbal and pharmaceutical research.
